Sending a gift from Bangladesh to Australia is simple on the tax side: most gift parcels pay no duty or GST. The part that catches people out is biosecurity. This guide shows what you can send, what to leave out, and what it costs, as of October 2026.
A gift from Bangladesh to Australia worth AUD 1,000 or less normally pays no customs duty and no GST at the border (alcohol and tobacco excepted). Australia has no separate "gift allowance" โ the same AUD 1,000 rule applies. The bigger risk is biosecurity: food, seeds, plant material and wooden items must be declared and can be treated, sent back or destroyed. Clothing, kantha, brass and books are the easiest gifts.
Want to send a gift from Bangladesh to Australia โ a saree for a wedding in Sydney, a panjabi for Eid in Melbourne, or a nakshi kantha for Christmas? I buy it in Dhaka, wrap it, and send it by courier to the door. This guide explains what it costs, what Australian customs and biosecurity check, and which gifts to leave out. Rules are as of October 2026.
No. The UK has a ยฃ39 gift rule and Canada has a CAD $60 gift rule, but Australia does not have a separate limit for gifts.
Instead, one simple rule covers gifts and purchases alike. The Australian Border Force says goods worth AUD 1,000 or less normally pay no customs duty and no GST at the border. Alcohol and tobacco are the exceptions โ they are taxed at any value.
If a parcel is worth more than AUD 1,000, it needs a formal Import Declaration. Duty and 10% GST may then apply unless a concession covers the item. The person in Australia may then have to pay before the parcel is delivered.
My advice: keep each gift parcel under AUD 1,000 and always declare the real value. Never under-declare a gift to avoid tax โ it can get the parcel held or seized. You can read more in my guide to customs duty on Bangladesh packages.
This is where many gift parcels go wrong. Australia's Department of Agriculture (DAFF) says a parcel must list everything inside, including the packing material. It also says words like "gift", "present" or "goods" on their own are not acceptable.
So I write a clear line for each item, for example: "1 cotton handloom saree, 1 brass flower vase, 2 Bangla paperback books". The parcel can still be marked as a gift, but the contents must be described too.
A clear label helps the parcel clear faster. DAFF also warns that hiding goods in a parcel can lead to an investigation.
Australian biosecurity is strict. It is not about tax โ it is about stopping pests, seeds and diseases. Here is how common gifts from Bangladesh compare.
Usually simple (no plant or animal material)
Must be declared โ may be inspected or treated
Please leave these out
By post, DAFF charges A$94 per item for treatment, paid by the person importing it. Courier parcels are screened by biosecurity too, and inspection or treatment charges can also apply. To avoid this, I pack gifts in clean paper or foam, never straw. My full list is on what I cannot ship from Bangladesh.
Your cost has three parts: the gift itself, my flat US$12 service fee (about AUD 17), and shipping.
Typical gift prices in Dhaka (estimates):
Example: a AUD 35 tant saree, gift-wrapped, sent by express: 35 + 17 + 100โ135 = roughly AUD 152โ187 delivered. This is an estimate โ your quote gives the exact figure. Several gifts in one box share one shipping cost, which is often cheaper.
Simple gift wrap and a card with your message are free. The invoice stays out of the box, so the person never sees the price. You can pay by PayPal, Wise or bank transfer โ see PayPal vs Wise vs bKash.
A biosecurity inspection can add a few days. For Christmas, I suggest messaging me by mid-November. For a wedding or Eid, start 3โ4 weeks before the date. To compare couriers, see the best courier to ship from Bangladesh.
Usually not. Australia's TGA says prescription medicines brought in under the personal importation scheme need a valid Australian prescription, must be for the person's own (or immediate family's) use, and are limited to a 3-month supply per import.
So medicine is not a good gift. If you or a family member needs a medicine or an insulin pen from Bangladesh, you must have a valid prescription and check Australian import rules before ordering. I only source medicines against a prescription. Read importing medicines from Bangladesh and shipping an insulin pen to Australia first.
Sending to another country too? See my guides for the UK, Canada and the USA, or the main gifts from Bangladesh page. Everything about Australia is on buying from Bangladesh to Australia.
Normally no. The Australian Border Force says goods worth AUD 1,000 or less pay no customs duty and no GST at the border, except alcohol and tobacco. Above AUD 1,000 an Import Declaration is needed and duty plus 10% GST may apply.
No. Australia has no separate gift limit like the UK's ยฃ39 or Canada's CAD $60 rule. Gifts and purchases follow the same AUD 1,000 rule.
No. Australia's Department of Agriculture says descriptions like "gift", "present" or "goods" are not acceptable on their own. List every item inside, including the packing material.
Food, seeds, rice, milk-based sweets, straw items and other plant material are high risk. Wooden, bamboo, cane and jute items must be declared and can be treated at your cost, sent back or destroyed. By post, treatment costs A$94 per item.
As an estimate, a AUD 35 tant saree sent by express courier costs roughly AUD 152โ187 delivered, including my US$12 (about AUD 17) fee. Your quote gives the exact figure before you pay.
Tell me who the gift is for, the occasion and your budget. I'll suggest options, show you photos, and tell you the full cost before you pay anything.
Bought in person, wrapped, declared honestly, every cost shown before you pay.
