How to Send a Gift from Bangladesh to the UK (2026)

You can send a gift from Bangladesh to the UK, and if it is a genuine gift worth £39 or less, the person in the UK pays no VAT and no customs duty on it. I buy the gift in person in Dhaka, wrap it, declare it honestly and send it with tracking to London, Birmingham, Manchester, Bradford, Oldham or anywhere else in the UK. This guide explains the UK gift rules and the real costs in pounds, as of October 2026.

💡 The short version

The UK charges no VAT on genuine gifts worth £39 or less, and no customs duty on non-excise goods worth £135 or less. A gift worth more than £39 pays 20% VAT, usually with a handling fee, before delivery. Several gifts for different people, wrapped and listed separately, each get their own £39 allowance. Express shipping costs about £35–50 for one or two clothing gifts. Request a free quote.

What Does the UK Count as a Gift?

The £39 allowance is only for real gifts. GOV.UK says the goods must be:

Here is what that means in practice. If your mother in Dhaka or your uncle in Sylhet pays for a birthday saree for you, that is a gift from them to you, and I declare it as a gift with their name. If you live in the UK and pay me for a panjabi for yourself, that is a purchase, not a gift. I will not label it as a gift.

One honest point: UK customs makes the final decision on every parcel, not me. A wrong "gift" label can lead to delays, extra charges or a penalty, so I always declare the real contents, the real value and the real sender.

Do I Pay VAT or Customs Duty on a Gift from Bangladesh?

It depends on the value of the gift. For Great Britain, the GOV.UK rules (updated 1 October 2026) work like this:

Printed books are a useful exception: they are zero-rated for UK VAT, so even a bigger parcel of books usually has no VAT to pay. See shipping Bangla books to the UK. Northern Ireland has different rules for some parcels; tell me if the gift is going there.

Can I Send Several Gifts in One Parcel?

Yes, and it can save money. GOV.UK says each gift gets its own allowance if the gifts are for different people, wrapped individually, and listed on the customs declaration with their own values.

Example: a £30 cotton panjabi for your brother and a £30 Tant saree for your sister, wrapped separately and listed separately, are two gifts of £30. Both are under £39, so normally no VAT is due. One £60 saree for one person is a single gift over £39, so 20% VAT is due, plus the carrier's handling fee.

I wrap each gift on its own, write the name of the person it is for, and list each one with its real price.

Who Pays the Charges, and When?

The person receiving the parcel pays, before delivery. If VAT, duty or a handling fee is due, Royal Mail, Parcelforce or the courier sends a bill stating exactly which fees to pay. They normally hold the parcel for about 3 weeks. If the bill is not paid, the parcel goes back to the sender.

For a gift of £39 or less with nothing to charge, the parcel is normally delivered with nothing to pay. GOV.UK says you do not have to pay the delivery company to receive goods worth less than £135, unless they are gifts over £39 or excise goods.

If the gift is a surprise, tell me. I will warn you in the quote if VAT is likely, so the person in the UK is not surprised by a bill at the door.

What Are Popular Gifts from Bangladesh to the UK?

These prices are estimates, converted at about 1 US dollar = £0.75 (October 2026). Your quote gives the exact figure.

⚠️ Medicines are not gifts

Please do not send medicines as a gift. I only source medicines against a valid prescription, and the UK has its own import rules for medicines, which can be stricter than the rules for clothes or books. Check the UK rules, or ask your doctor or pharmacist, before you order. Read importing medicines from Bangladesh and what I cannot ship.

How Much Does It Cost to Send a Gift to the UK?

Clothes are light, so shipping is usually the biggest cost. These are estimates; your quote gives the exact figure.

Example: a £20 Tant saree as a birthday gift, sent by express, comes to roughly £20 + £9 + £35–50 = about £64–79 delivered. As a genuine gift under £39, it normally arrives with nothing more to pay. Compare carriers in my best courier from Bangladesh guide.

When Should I Order a Gift for Christmas, Eid or a Wedding?

Choosing and buying usually takes 1–3 days, and express delivery to the UK about 5–10 days after dispatch. Couriers get busy before Christmas, and Dhaka shops get busy before Eid, so my advice is to message me at least 3 weeks before the date. For Christmas, that means mid-November or earlier.

For a wedding, start earlier, because sizes and colours need checking. Read wedding shopping from abroad, or see sending Eid gifts from Bangladesh.

How Ordering Works

Send your request with the gift idea, the budget, who it is for, the occasion and the UK address. I reply with real options and photos, and an itemized quote. You pay after approving it, by PayPal, Wise, bKash or bank transfer. The person paying can be in Bangladesh, the UK or anywhere else, but the gift label depends on who is really giving it.

I can gift-wrap it and add a card with your message, with no invoice in the box. More guides: sending gifts from Bangladesh to any country, buying from Bangladesh to the UK, and customs duty on Bangladesh parcels.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I pay tax on a gift sent from Bangladesh to the UK?

Not if it is a genuine gift worth £39 or less: the UK charges no VAT on it, and there is no customs duty on non-excise goods worth £135 or less. A gift worth more than £39 is charged 20% VAT. Above £135, customs duty can apply too.

What counts as a gift for UK customs?

GOV.UK says a gift must be for a birthday, anniversary or other occasion, bought and sent between individuals (not companies), meant for personal use, and described as a gift on the customs declaration. Something you pay for and send to yourself is a purchase, not a gift.

Can I send several gifts in one parcel from Bangladesh to the UK?

Yes. Each gift gets its own £39 allowance if the gifts are for different people, wrapped individually, and listed on the customs declaration with their own values. Two £30 gifts for two people can arrive with no VAT, while one £60 gift is charged VAT.

Do you pay customs before or after delivery in the UK?

Before. If VAT, duty or a handling fee is due, Royal Mail, Parcelforce or the courier sends a bill, and you pay it before they deliver. They normally hold the parcel for about 3 weeks, and if the bill is not paid it goes back to the sender.

How much does it cost to send a gift from Bangladesh to the UK?

As an estimate, one or two clothing gifts cost about £35–50 to send by express courier, and a 1 kg parcel by Bangladesh Post EMS about £26–38. My service fee is a flat US$12, about £9. Your quote gives the exact figure before you pay.
