🧺 Shital Pati

Buy a Genuine Shital Pati from Bangladesh

Shital pati ("cool mat") is the smooth, handwoven mat from Sylhet that stays cool to sleep or sit on. In 2017 UNESCO listed the traditional art of Shital Pati weaving of Sylhet as Intangible Cultural Heritage. Many Bangladeshis abroad miss it. Here is how to get one.

💡 The short version

Tell me the size, colour or pattern, and how many. I source genuine murta-cane shital pati, send photos, and ship it rolled and wrapped with tracking. Plain mats are affordable; finely woven or patterned pieces cost more.

What Is Shital Pati?

Shital pati is woven by hand from thin strips of murta, a green cane that grows in the wetlands of greater Sylhet. Weavers split, boil and dry the cane, then weave it into a smooth, slightly shiny mat. It stays cool even in hot weather, which is why it has been used for sleeping, sitting and prayer for generations. Women do much of the weaving, and the skill passes down within families.

Types You Can Order

Price and Shipping

Shital pati is reasonably priced in Bangladesh; the price depends on size, how fine the weave is and whether it is patterned. A finely woven large mat can cost several times more than a plain one. Mats are rolled, not folded, so the parcel is long. That affects the courier price more than the weight. I measure the rolled mat and give you the exact shipping cost before you pay. A small prayer mat is the cheapest to ship.

Care and Customs

Keep it dry, roll rather than fold, and wipe with a damp cloth. Shital pati is a natural plant product, so countries with strict biosecurity rules (especially Australia and New Zealand) may inspect it. I send clean, dry, finished mats and declare them correctly. Check your country guide: USA, UK, Europe, Canada, Australia or the Middle East.
