Want a Benarasi saree from Bangladesh for a wedding, holud or Eid? Bangladesh's best-known Benarasi and Katan market is Mirpur Benarasi Palli in Dhaka. This guide explains the types, honest prices, how to avoid imported stock sold as local, and shipping abroad, as of November 2026.
Tell me the occasion, colour, budget and date. I shop Mirpur Benarasi Palli and trusted Dhaka saree shops, show you sarees live on a WhatsApp video call, and tell you what the shop says about where each one was woven. As an estimate, a simple Benarasi costs about $20โ60, a festive one $60โ200 and a bridal Katan $250 or more. Express shipping is usually $40โ65.
A Benarasi is a silk saree with patterns woven in zari (metallic thread), usually with a rich border and a heavy pallu. The name comes from Benares (Varanasi) in India. After the partition of 1947, weaver families from Benares settled in Mirpur, Dhaka, and the craft grew there.
The best-known place to buy one is Mirpur Benarasi Palli, a cluster of weaving homes and saree shops in Mirpur. It is the place Dhaka families go for wedding and festival silk. A smaller Benarasi Palli also exists in Gangachara, Rangpur, set up in 2005.
The best-known local type is the Mirpur Katan. In May 2025 The Daily Star reported that it had recently been granted geographical indication (GI) status. Weavers describe Katan as heavier silk with more detailed motifs than an ordinary Benarasi.
"Banarasi" and "Benarasi" are the same word in two spellings. In Bangladesh you will mostly see "Benarasi".
These are estimates โ your quote gives the exact figure before you pay. Prices have risen fast: in 2025 weavers said silk thread (resham) went from about Tk 1,200 to nearly Tk 10,500 per kg in under two decades. In US dollars, I use about Tk 124 per dollar (late October 2026).
This is the most important question, and the honest answer is that many sarees in Benarasi Palli are not woven there. In 2014 shop owners told Prothom Alo that about 60% of the saris in the market came from India. In 2025 weavers told The Daily Star that cheap Indian sarees are still sold as Bangladeshi. So here is what I do:
A clear limit: no one can prove a saree's origin 100% just by looking at it. If a shop cannot answer clearly, I tell you that too, and the price should match. For the same checks on Jamdani, see real Jamdani vs machine-made.
A festive Benarasi weighs about the same as other sarees, roughly 300โ600 g. A heavy bridal Katan with its blouse piece and padding can be close to 1 kg. As an estimate, express shipping for one or two sarees is about $40โ65; for a full kilo it is about $60โ70 to the USA, UK or Europe and $70โ95 to Australia. My service fee is a flat $12. I fold each saree in tissue, add a waterproof layer and box it, so the zari is not crushed.
Example: a $300 bridal Katan to London โ $300 + $12 fee + about $60โ70 express โ $372โ382 before UK tax. Because it is worth more than ยฃ135, UK customs duty can apply as well as 20% VAT, collected by the courier.
I always declare the real value. I will not under-declare a wedding saree, because a true value also matters if a parcel is ever lost or damaged. For courier choice, see the best courier from Bangladesh. Adding attar or jewellery to the box? Check what I cannot ship first.
November to February is wedding season in Bangladesh, and the shops are busiest just before Eid. Eid ul-Fitr 2027 is expected around 10 March, depending on the moon. Send me photos of sarees you like, the colour you want and the blouse measurements, and I will shortlist pieces before the video call.
Dry-clean only. Store it folded in soft cotton or muslin, away from damp, and refold it every few months so the creases do not weaken the silk. Spray perfume before you put the saree on, not onto the zari.

As an estimate, a simple Benarasi or silk blend costs about 20 to 60 US dollars, a festive handwoven Benarasi about 60 to 200 dollars, and a bridal Mirpur Katan about 250 to 600 dollars or more. Your quote gives the exact price before you pay.
Mirpur Katan is a heavy silk saree with dense, detailed woven motifs, made in Mirpur, Dhaka, and recently given GI status in Bangladesh. Benarasi is the wider name for zari-woven silk sarees, which can be lighter, blended or imported from India.
No. Many are imported from India; in 2014 shop owners said about 60% of the market's saris came from India. I ask each shop where a saree was woven and pass on exactly what they say before you pay.
Express shipping for one or two sarees usually costs about 40 to 65 US dollars. A heavy bridal Katan can weigh close to 1 kg with packing, which is about 60 to 70 dollars to the USA, UK or Europe. Customs charges in your country are extra.
Message me 6 to 8 weeks before the wedding for the saree alone. Add about 1 to 2 weeks for blouse stitching, and start 8 to 10 weeks ahead if you need full wedding shopping.
