Jamdani is Bangladesh's most famous handloom โ recognised by UNESCO in 2013 and Bangladesh's first geographical indication (GI) product in 2016. Real Jamdani is woven by hand near Dhaka, and copies are everywhere. Here is how to buy the real thing from abroad.
Tell me your budget, colours and the occasion. I source from Jamdani weavers and trusted Dhaka handloom shops, send close-up photos of the front and the reverse before you pay, and ship by express courier with tracking. Genuine handwoven Jamdani usually starts around $80; fine pieces cost several hundred dollars.
In Jamdani, the patterns are not printed or embroidered. The weaver adds each motif by hand, thread by thread, while weaving on the loom. That is why a fine Jamdani can take weeks or even months to make. The craft has grown for centuries along the Shitalakshya River near Dhaka, and today it is centred on Rupganj and Sonargaon in Narayanganj district. In 2013 UNESCO listed the traditional art of Jamdani weaving as Intangible Cultural Heritage, and in 2016 Jamdani became Bangladesh's first registered GI product.
If someone offers a "pure handloom Jamdani" for $25โ50 with free shipping, it is almost certainly machine-made. That can be a nice saree โ but it should be sold at a machine-made price. My full checklist is in real Jamdani vs machine-made.
A Jamdani weighs only about 300โ600 g, so express shipping is affordable โ usually $40โ60 for one or two sarees. I fold it with acid-free tissue, wrap it in a waterproof layer and box it, so it arrives clean and dry. Example: a $120 Jamdani to the UK โ $120 + $15 service fee + ~$50 courier โ ~$185 delivered, plus any local tax. Country details: USA, UK, Canada, or the general customs duty guide.
Dry-clean or hand-wash gently in cold water, dry in shade, and store folded in cotton or muslin โ refold it every few months so the creases don't weaken the threads. Avoid hanging it for long periods.

Genuine handwoven Jamdani usually starts around 80 US dollars for simple cotton pieces. Mid-range pieces are about 120 to 250 dollars, and fine heritage pieces cost 300 dollars or more.
Look at the reverse side. In real Jamdani the motifs are woven in by hand, so the back looks similar to the front with small irregularities and no long loose machine threads. I send close-up photos of both sides before you pay.
Mainly in Rupganj and Sonargaon in Narayanganj district, near Dhaka, along the Shitalakshya River. UNESCO recognised Jamdani weaving in 2013, and it became Bangladesh's first GI product in 2016.
Usually about 40 to 60 US dollars by express courier for one or two sarees, because sarees are light and fold flat.
Ready-made pieces take 1 to 3 days to source and pack, then 3 to 7 working days by courier. A custom-woven piece can take several weeks, so plan early for weddings.
