How to Ship Bangla Books from Bangladesh to the UK (2026)

Want Bangla books for your children in London, Birmingham or Manchester, or a novel you cannot find in a UK shop? You can ship Bangla books from Bangladesh to the UK at a fair cost, and in most cases there is no VAT or customs duty to pay. This guide explains the UK rules for books, what it costs and how I buy and pack them, as of October 2026.

💡 The short version

Printed books are zero-rated for VAT in the UK, and UK law says no import VAT is charged on zero-rated goods. There is also no customs duty on goods worth £135 or less. So a parcel of Bangla books usually arrives with nothing to pay. Notebooks, diaries and stationery are different: they carry 20% VAT. Shipping 1 kg costs about £45–53 by express (estimate). Do I Pay VAT or Customs Duty on Books Shipped to the UK?

In most cases, no. In the UK, printed books, booklets, children's picture books, newspapers and printed music are zero-rated for VAT. HMRC explains this in VAT Notice 701/10.

The VAT Act 1994 (section 30) adds that no VAT is charged when zero-rated goods are imported. So the 20% import VAT that can apply to a saree or a box of tea does not apply to a parcel of printed books.

Customs duty is simple too. GOV.UK says there is no customs duty on non-excise goods worth £135 or less, and most book parcels are well under that. For a bigger order, I check the UK Trade Tariff for books before you pay and tell you the result.

What this means for you: when no VAT or duty is due, Royal Mail or the courier normally has nothing to collect. So there is usually no handling fee either. One exception: parcels to Northern Ireland can follow different rules, so I check them before you pay.

Which Items Are Not Zero-Rated?

The zero rate is for printed books, not for everything made of paper. HMRC lists these as standard-rated (20% VAT):

If your parcel mixes books with clothes, tea or other goods, VAT can apply to those other items. I list every item separately on the invoice, so the books are clearly shown as books. Sending food too? Check what I can't ship from Bangladesh first.

Which Bangla Books Can I Get for You?

Almost any book that is in print in Bangladesh. Customers in the UK most often want:

I search Nilkhet, Aziz Super Market and publishers in Dhaka, and send you photos before I buy so you can check the edition. Some popular titles are also sold as cheap photocopied editions. I buy original printed editions and tell you if only a copy is available. If I cannot find a rare or out-of-print book, I say so honestly. More on what I source: buy Bangla books from Bangladesh.

How Much Does It Cost to Ship Books to the UK?

Books are cheap in Dhaka. The real cost is weight. These are estimates, converted at about 1 US dollar = £0.75 (October 2026). Your quote gives the exact figure.

A paperback novel often weighs about 250–400 g, so 1 kg is roughly two to four books. Hardbacks and textbooks are heavier. Heavier parcels cost less per kilo, so one bigger order is better value than several small ones. I weigh the parcel and compare carriers before you pay. See my best courier from Bangladesh guide.

How I Pack Books So They Arrive Clean

Dhaka is humid, so I wrap books in plastic against moisture first. Then I pack them flat and tight, with card protection on the corners, so spines and covers do not bend. Every parcel has tracking from Dhaka to your door, and I send you the tracking number.

How Ordering Works

Send your book list: titles, authors, a photo of the cover, or just the kind of book you want for your child. I reply within 24 hours with what I can find and an itemized quote: book prices, my fee, packing and shipping, each shown separately. You pay only after you approve it, by PayPal, Wise, bKash or bank transfer; Wise works well from the UK. Then I buy, photograph, pack and ship.
