Printed books have a US duty rate of free. Trade advisories on CBP's July 2026 guidance say "informational materials", including publications, are outside the new 10% Section 301 tariff on Bangladesh goods. Since the $800 de minimis rule ended, every parcel needs a customs entry, so a courier may still add its own fee. Shipping 1 kg costs about $60–70 by express (estimate). Request a free quote.
No. In the US tariff schedule, printed books (4901.10, 4901.91 and 4901.99) and children's picture, drawing and colouring books (4903.00) all have a general duty rate of free. That covers novels, poetry, textbooks, dictionaries, the Quran and other religious books, and picture books for children.
This does not depend on the value. A $20 parcel of books and a $200 parcel of books both have no normal duty.
Since 24 July 2026, most goods from Bangladesh carry an extra 10% Section 301 tariff. But trade advisories on CBP's guidance for this tariff list informational materials — publications, film, artwork and similar media — as outside it. Printed books are publications, so they should not pay this 10%.
One honest point: US tariff rules have changed many times since 2025. The courier's customs broker makes the actual entry, and I cannot promise how every parcel is processed. I declare books clearly as printed books, with titles and real prices on the invoice, so they are easy to classify.
Until 29 August 2025, a parcel worth $800 or less could enter the US with no duty and almost no paperwork. That rule has ended. Now every parcel needs a proper customs entry, even when no duty is due.
For books, this mostly changes paperwork, not tax. The duty is still zero. But some couriers charge a fee for preparing the customs entry. I check the courier's current charge before you pay, so it is not a surprise at your door.
The free duty rate is for books only. If your parcel also has clothes, tea, snacks or handicrafts, those items can carry their normal duty plus the 10% Section 301 tariff. Food also needs FDA prior notice, and some foods cannot go at all.
I list every item separately on the invoice, so the books are clearly shown as books. If a mixed parcel or separate parcels would cost less overall, I tell you in the quote.
You can, but for books you do not need the gift rule. The US $100 gift exemption mainly helps with goods that would pay duty. Books are duty-free anyway. Also, US rules say a parcel from a business is not normally a gift. More in my guide to sending a gift from Bangladesh to the USA.

A paperback novel often weighs about 250–400 g, so 1 kg is roughly two to four books. Hardbacks and textbooks are heavier. Heavier parcels usually cost less per kilo, so one bigger order is often better value than several small ones. I weigh the parcel and compare carriers before you pay. Bangladesh Post stopped accepting US-bound parcels from 28 August 2025, after the de minimis change. I have not been able to confirm that the service has restarted. So for the USA I use express couriers, which also give full tracking.
Dhaka is humid, so I wrap books in plastic against moisture first. Then I pack them flat and tight, with card protection on the corners, so spines and covers do not bend. Every parcel has tracking, and I send you the tracking number.
