Visiting family in Bangladesh from the UK, USA, Middle East or elsewhere? Here's what to sort out before you fly — NVR, baggage and gold rules, cash — and how to avoid overloaded suitcases on the way back.
If you hold a foreign passport and are of Bangladeshi origin, get an NVR (and transfer it when you renew your passport). Know the baggage limits: two used phones are duty-free but a new one is taxed; up to 100 g of gold ornaments a year duty-free; declare foreign cash above US$5,000. On the way back, carry what you need and ship the rest.
I last checked these details in October 2026 against official and news sources. Bangladesh's visa, airport and customs rules change often. Always confirm with the official source (Bangladesh embassy, immigration or customs) before you travel. This is general travel information, not legal advice.
Foreign passport holders of Bangladeshi origin (and their spouses and children) can apply for a No Visa Required endorsement through the Bangladesh mission in their country. It isn't fast — the High Commission in London says it is never an urgent service — so apply weeks ahead. If you renew your foreign passport, transfer the NVR to the new one. Full details in my Bangladesh visa guide.
Baggage rules are revised often in the national budget. Check the latest from Bangladesh Customs (NBR) before you travel.
Airline baggage allowances fill up fast with sarees, books, spices and gifts. Instead of paying excess-baggage fees or leaving things behind, give them to me (or tell me what to buy) and I'll pack and ship them to your home with tracking. Many families also order again later — food you miss, sarees, panjabis for Eid, or medical devices with a prescription.
I'm a Dhaka-based personal shopper and local helper. Through my travel concierge service I can arrange airport pickup, help with hotels and transport, find a guide, and shop with you or for you. If you can't come at all, I can buy things in Bangladesh and ship them to you. Message me before your trip with your dates and what you need.
