💉 Insulin Pen → UK

How to Ship an Insulin Pen from Bangladesh to the UK

Can you ship an insulin pen from Bangladesh to the UK, such as a ConviPen or a NovoPen 4? Usually yes, for your own use, and the UK is more relaxed than the USA. But there is one thing to check first: on the NHS your insulin may already be free, and your pen may be available on prescription too. This guide covers the UK rules, VAT, which pen fits your cartridges and real costs in pounds, as of October 2026.

💡 The short version

The UK government said in June 2026 that personal imports of medicines for your own use are not regulated by the MHRA, so one reusable pen for yourself can normally be sent. Border Force can still inspect any parcel. Do not import insulin: it must stay cold, and insulin users can get NHS prescriptions free. One pen delivered costs roughly £50–70 (estimate). Ask me first.

⚠️ Medical & import disclaimer — please read

Prescription required. I only source insulin pens for customers who share a valid prescription or doctor's note for insulin therapy. UK import rules apply. Border Force and HMRC decide what enters the UK, and they can hold or seize any parcel. Controlled drugs need a Home Office licence. Check the rules before you order, and accept that clearance is never guaranteed. No medical advice. I am a personal shopper, not a doctor or pharmacist. Talk to your GP, pharmacist or diabetes nurse before you change to a different pen.

Can I Legally Import an Insulin Pen into the UK?

For your own use, normally yes. On 10 June 2026 a health minister answered a written question in Parliament about buying medicines from overseas. The answer said the import rules in the Human Medicines Regulations 2012 do not apply to a person who imports a medicine to use themselves. It said this activity "is thus not regulated by the MHRA", so the MHRA has no special guidance on it.

A reusable insulin pen is a medical device, not a medicine. I could not find any UK rule that stops a person bringing in one pen for their own use. That is not the same as a guarantee:

So I keep it simple: one pen, or one pen plus a spare. I put the pharmacy receipt, a copy of your prescription and a short personal-use note in the parcel, so an officer can see what it is.

Should I Also Import Insulin Cartridges?

My honest advice is no. Insulin has to stay cold, between 2 and 8°C before use, and a courier trip of a week or more makes that hard to guarantee. Warm insulin can stop working properly, and the damage is not always visible.

There is also little money to save. In England, people whose diabetes is treated with more than diet alone can get a medical exemption certificate from the NHS, which gives free prescriptions. Prescriptions are already free in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. So get your insulin from your UK pharmacy, and import only the pen if you decide to. My guide to importing medicines from Bangladesh explains other medicines.

Ask Your NHS Team Before You Order

This is the step most people skip. Your GP or diabetes clinic may be able to prescribe a reusable pen. Before you pay for one from Bangladesh, ask your diabetes nurse if the pen you want can be prescribed. If it can, you may not need me at all, and I would rather tell you that now.

Ordering from Bangladesh makes most sense when you want the same model you used at home, need a quick spare, or your family in Dhaka wants to send one for you. In every case, the pen must match your cartridges.

Which Pen Works with My UK Insulin?

A reusable pen only helps you if your prescription is for 3 mL cartridges. If you use prefilled disposable pens or vials, a reusable pen will not help, unless your doctor changes the prescription.

Pens are not universal. Each insulin maker designs its pen for its own cartridges, and the wrong pair can give the wrong dose. Start with the brand on your cartridge box:

What about ConviPen? The ConviPen is made by Incepta in Bangladesh, and the GensuPen 2 by Beximco. I cannot confirm that either is sold in the UK or fits cartridges from a UK pharmacy, so please ask your pharmacist first. Compare all five pens in my reusable insulin pen guide.

Will I Pay VAT or Duty on an Insulin Pen in the UK?

Duty, almost certainly not. GOV.UK says there is no customs duty on non-excise goods worth £135 or less, and a single pen is far below that.

VAT is possible. Import VAT in the UK is 20%, and GOV.UK says it is worked out on the total value, including postage, packaging and insurance. If the courier collects it, they usually add a handling fee and ask you to pay before delivery. I declare the pen honestly as a personal medical device with its real value. Read my customs duty guide for how UK charges work on other items.

How Much Does It Cost to Ship an Insulin Pen to the UK?

These are estimates in pounds. Your quote gives the exact figure.

Example: one NovoPen 4 sent to Birmingham comes to roughly £50–70 delivered, before any VAT or handling fee. Compare couriers in my best courier from Bangladesh guide.

How Long Does It Take?

I check stock at licensed Dhaka pharmacies and send your quote within 24 hours. Buying and packing adds 1–3 days. Express delivery to the UK usually takes about 5–10 days after dispatch, plus any time the parcel spends with Border Force. The pen does not need cold packing, because it is a mechanical device.

How Ordering Works

Send your request with the pen you need, a photo of your cartridge box, your prescription and your UK address. I reply within 24 hours with a quote and an honest view of any risk. You pay only after approving the quote, by PayPal, Wise, bKash or bank transfer. I buy the pen sealed, send photos of the box, batch number and dates, pack it with the receipt and documents, and ship it with tracking.

Some items cannot be shipped at all; see what I can't ship from Bangladesh. For everything else people in the UK order from home, read buy from Bangladesh to the UK. For other countries, see the USA, Canada and Australia insulin pen guides.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I ship a ConviPen from Bangladesh to the UK?

Usually yes, if it is one pen for your own use and you have a prescription for insulin. The UK government says personal imports of medicines are not regulated by the MHRA, but Border Force can still inspect or hold any parcel. Check with your pharmacist that the pen fits your UK cartridges first.

Is it legal to import medicine or an insulin pen into the UK for personal use?

For your own use, normally yes. A June 2026 parliamentary answer said the import rules in the Human Medicines Regulations 2012 do not apply to a person importing a medicine to use themselves. Controlled drugs are different and need a Home Office licence.

Should I import insulin cartridges from Bangladesh to the UK?

I advise against it. Insulin must stay between 2 and 8°C before use, which is hard to guarantee on a courier trip. People who use insulin can get their NHS prescriptions free, so get your insulin from a UK pharmacy and import only the pen.

Do I pay VAT or duty on an insulin pen sent to the UK?

There is no customs duty on non-excise goods worth £135 or less, so one pen normally pays no duty. Import VAT at 20% can be charged on the value including postage, and the courier may add a handling fee before delivery.

How much does it cost to ship an insulin pen from Bangladesh to the UK?

As an estimate, one pen costs about £50 to £70 delivered: about £5 to £8 for the pen, my US$12 (about £9) service fee, and £35 to £50 for express shipping. Any VAT or handling fee is extra, and your quote gives the exact figure.
